In their wisdom, IT support at my office has created a special folder called "archived" on our IMAP mail server, which keeps a copy of every incoming email. My problem is, the copies are also marked "unread" so the mail notification continually shows 1000's of new mails. Even if I manually mark messages in the archived folder as "read", they seem to reappear as unread every time a new email comes in!
IT have told me there's nothing they can do to fix this irritating issue. So I resolved to tackle it myself. I tried:
1) to only check for new mail in the inbox folder
- it seems there was an option to do this in pre 3.0 versions, but no longer.
2) excluding "archived" from the IMAP synchronisation
- I can't figure out how to do this
3) setting up a filter to automatically set mail in "archived" to be read
- I can't figure out how to apply a rule to messages arriving in a specific folder. So, by default it's marking every incoming mail as read.
I'm totally at a loss now...any suggestions??

Re: exclude specific imap folder
Uncheck the folder in tools -> account settings -> synchronization & storage -> advanced . Then right click on the remote folder in the folder pane, select subscribe, and remove it from the list of subscribed folders. If you still want to see the folder right click on it, select properties, general information tab and then uncheck "when getting new mail for this account always check this folder" instead of unsubscribing it.

This answer still valid! Thank you for your help.
But nowadays the menu has changed to:
edit -> account settings -> synchronization & storage -> advanced
Then, expand your e-mail and uncheck the folder which you don't want do download anymore
