Importing .emlx files into Thunderbird?

Post by riverteeth98 »

Thanks in advance!

I have been using mac mail (most recently running Snow Leopard) for a long time and have a lot of old mail I'd like to import into Thunderbird. All my old mail is in folders labeled .mbox, although apparently they are mbox files. These folders have .emlx files inside, which I assume are the messages themselves. How can I import these into Thunderbird?

I've tried using the ImportExportTools extension, but it doesn't seem to work.

It would be easy if you still had your Mac!
To open or import in Thunderbird your "xxxx.emlx" messages from Apple Mail you can rename them in "xxxx.eml" and then drag them in the Thread Pane. I don't know whether Windows has a batch processing program doing the renaming. On Mac I use to do this with "Automator".
You may also have a look at these pages describing a different approach:

riverteeth98, there are freeware utilities for Windows that make batch renaming possible. One example is http://download.cnet.com/Batch-File-Ren ... 55280.html

Did you try renaming those files from .emlx to .eml before trying to import them using the ImportExportTools extension? It does work with .eml files.

Hi there, the last post was 2 years ago, tho hopefully my Q will work
Q ... With regard to your suggested method of dragging the .emlx files into the Thunderbird Thread pane (after changing file name to .eml) ... is it safe to do this if your Thunderbird program already has various emails stored in it's single large Inbox file?

When you say Threads pane, I am assuming you are talking about the main window listing all your emails within an email account, while one of the email account Inboxes is selected in the far left window.

Thanks for reading

PS: With regard to the links, I have checked them out, tho I see that the Mac version of the CosmicSoft program doesn't work for non-Intel macs (which I currently use).. tho I'm sure Intel Mac users will make good use of it :)

The last version of ImportExportTools (2.8.0.4) can import the emlx files into Thunderbird.
