How to open more than 8 Message Windows at a time?

Sometimes I need to reply to up to 20 messages at the same time. When I try to open more than 8 messages for reply (I use Ctrl+R to open the reply windows for selected messages), only 8 of the messages are opened for reply and the other selected messages are not open for reply.

Is there a way to change this maximum setting to more than 8, like 20?

I was just able to open at least 11 messages for reply.

Can you see if you can open more than 8 while running Thunderbird in safe mode?

Perhaps it relates to the amount of memory on the particular machine?

That doesn't make sense. But I've tried it on different machines, and it definitely has nothing to do with the amount of memory.

Maybe Vista put a cap on the number of open windows you could have per program/group that was removed in Win7. What happened in safe mode?

You can't change this, because it's a hardcoded limit:

Thanks klades, no one had answer this question. It is a kind of dumb programming that you would expect from Microsoft, but not Mozilla to hardcode an important number such as this. There is no extension that addresses this problem; so I guess I have to modify the source code myself.

You don't need to modify the source: just write an extension that overwrites that javascript function, changing the max number.
It's very easy to do (of course if you've some skill in coding).

Well, unless one of your extensions already does this, I just opened 12 compose windows (I stopped at 12, because well, I like the number 12 ). I use your Change Quote and Reply extension.

Then, just to be sure, I opened 14 compose windows in safe mode.

My modus operandi for both of the above was to just keep clicking the write button to spawn a new compose window. I didn't see anything in the linked source code to indicate that was a Vista specific override, but I am not adept at reading code. In my earlier report of having 11 reply windows open, I hit CTRL+R after selecting a message in my inbox. I did that for the first 11 messages in my inbox.

smsmith: You can probably even open a 1000 windows in that way. I have tried up to 70 messages, and it worked. However, the issue was selecting more than 8 messages, and then pressing "Ctrl + R"to reply to them so that each message opens in a new window, ready to be replied to; that's where the 8 windows maximum comes to play.

Ha! No, doing it that way I only get one to open, whichever the first message is in the group selected.
