problem with Thunderbird and Enigmail / Gnu PGP

Post by themonman »

Using:
Thunderbird v.14.0
Enigmail version 1.4.3 (20120706-1716)
Gpg4win 2.1.1 Beta
Windows 7 64-bit

Select OpenPGP > About OpenPGP
In the About OpenPGP window, I get:

GnuPG support provided by Enigmail
Running Enigmail version 1.4.3 (20120706-1716)
ERROR: Failed to access Enigmime service!

I also get the following error when trying to configure OpenPGP using the wizard:
OpenPGP initialization failed.

You are using GnuPG version 0.9.2, which is not up to date anymore. Enigmail requires GnuPG version 1.4 or newer; please upgrade your GnuPG installation, or OpenPGP will not work.

However, according to http://www.gpg4win.org/download.html
GnuPG version 0.9. is the latest version

Any ideas?
Thanks.

http://www.gpg4win.org/download.html has a download link for gpg4win 2.1.0 . That supposedly includes "GnuPG 2.0.17". Perhaps they made an error in the beta (which you appear to be using).

I tried 2.1.0 --- same problem...

Anyway, according to http://www.gpg4win.org/download.html
GnuPG version 0.9. is the latest version

The version of the web page I see doesn't even mention 0.9. I installed 2.1.0 but I don't know how to verify the version of gnupg without using enigmail. How do you do that?

On that web page http://www.gpg4win.org/download.html
at the right, there is a beige box. It contains:
Gpg4win 2.1.1 Beta contains:

GnuPG 2.0.19
Kleopatra 2.1.0 (2011-02-04)
GPA 0.9.2
GpgOL 1.1.3
GpgEX 0.9.7
Claws Mail 3.8.0cvs30
Kompendium (de) 3.0.0
Compendium (en) 3.0.0-beta1

To see the version of gnupg, launch the GPA app (GNU Privacy Assistant - Key Manager)
Go to Help > About
You'll see:
GPA 0.9.2
(GnuPG 2.0.19)

thanks

I have no idea what file is the gpa app. Please keep in mind I don't use enigmail.

I also was looking for a way to verify the version (perhaps using command line arguments) that didn't require trusting what another application says.

The GPA app is the Gnu pgp app. For Windows, it's called "Gpg4win".
It is required for Enigmail.

Do you have Gpg4win installed?

If you don't use Enigmail for Thunderbird, please tell me what you use with Thunderbird to encrypt email messages.
Thanks.

I don't encrypt my email since nobody I normally exchange mail with cares to go to the trouble of enabling support for decrypting/encrypting mail.

I installed gpg4win (plus checked the checkbox for gpa). I tried running "gpa.exe". It identifies itself as the "gnu privacy assistant - key manager". help -> about reports:

GPA 0.9.1-svn1024
(GnuPG 2.0.17)

I repeat my suggestion you don't use a beta.

I'm not using a beta now. As I mentioned in my previous post after you made that suggestion. I'm using Gpg4win 2.1.0.
The Help > About that you show is correct.

The problem is that Enigmail says:
You are using GnuPG version 0.9.2, which is not up to date anymore. Enigmail requires GnuPG version 1.4 or newer; please upgrade your GnuPG installation, or OpenPGP will not work.
I'm already using version 2.1.0, which is higher than version 0.9.2

Is there anyone in this forum that has experience using Enigmail with Thunderbird?

thanks.

There are some, but few. I suggest you browse http://www.mozilla-enigmail.org/forum/ to see if anybody has had the same problem. I took a quick look and didn't find any recent posts about similar problems so I'd assume its not a wide spread problem.

You might try installing an older version of Thunderbird in a different directory and see if it has the same problem. It will use your existing profile and you can switch between them as desired. See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Go_back_to_an ... hunderbird for a link to old setup programs.
