Never sent emails returned???

Post by Flycaster »

Seven undeliverable emails were returned to my wife this morning. She says she never sent them in the first place. There were about 12 folks listed as recipients and about half of them haven't been contacted in years. There was an attachment (not opened) that showed up negative on a Norton scan. Here is a copy of one of the return notifications, maybe someone can explain what happened.

I first thing I would do is look in the sent folder and see if it exists there. If it does then there is a pretty good chance it was sent by mistake, a strange filter hit or some sort of system burp.

The worrisome thing about this is that is was sent to folks you know. When I first read this my first thought was someone was spoofing your address.

Yeah, that's what I am worried about. Checked the Sent box and nothing there related to these emails.

I would do is a full scan with your Anti-Virus even if you have done one recently. What was the subject of the email if it had one. Also, does the PDF file have a name showing in its file name (don't open it).

Something else you might look into. Go to the comcast's web mail page for that account and see if it is in the sent file there.

Checked comcast.net sent emails for my wife's account. There were three emails sent at 4am. She was asleep at that time.

So at least it looks like it has nothing to do with your system. I would change the password and see if that takes care of the problem.

Tell me if I am correct on how to change her PW: Tools>Options>Security>Passwords. Delete her PW and simply wait to be prompted for her password and enter a new one???

First log into her comcast webmail and change her password there.

Then delete her old password from TBird and let it ask you for the new one when you next log into the server. Menu Path:
Tools | Options (for Windows), or
Thunderbird | Preferences (for OSX), or
Edit | Preferences (for *nix)
.. then Privacy | Passwords | Edit Saved Passwords | Passwords Saved

Click on the server in question and click the Remove button.

If she's sending via comcast's SMTP server she'll have to delete that one as well.

Thanks Doug. Since I have never had a lick of trouble with Tb I was getting real close to "Yeah, try that" answers :)

Flycatcher, while this is likely to solve the problem it would be a good idea to check the web mail sites for all of your accounts for the next week or so.
