Sending of password did not succeed

Post by Mike109 »

I have several sbcglobal yahoo email accounts that have worked for years. The other day I started having problems with one of them via TB 17.0.8. It was working in the morning but not in the afternoon. I'd try to get my email but got this message instead:

Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server pop.att.yahoo.com responded: Please verify your account by going to https://login.yahoo.com (#MBR1213)

However I can still access email from att.yahoo.com.

The next morning TB was able to get my email. I figured it must have been a server glitch. But later in that 2nd day TB would not work again. The 3rd day everything was OK all day. The 4th day TB did not work. I called Yahoo mail help & was transferred to AT&T and they were no help. They asked about my settings & of course I explained nothing has changed. Anyway got nowhere with them.

I changed the att.yahoo.com password & also in TB & everything started working again. For a day & half anyway. Now I get the same error message.

TB updated just a few days before the problem began. But again all the other email accounts work OK. I Googled & there were several results, but they were widely scattered in time. IOW maybe 1 in June 2013, 1 in July 2013, 1 in April 2012, etc. IOW no widespread problem.

And ideas or suggestions on how to get TB working again on this one account would be appreciated.
Thanks.

The Yahoo POP server periodically has glitches. Its IMAP server works fine. I assume AT&T Yahoo is using the same server, just with a different domain . You might consider adding a AT&T Yahoo IMAP account and seeing if it works. If it does then move any downloaded messages from your POP account to Local Folders and delete the POP account. Yahoo officially claims IMAP is only supported for Zimba and smartphones but its widely used with Thunderbird and other desktop email clients. So I suspect you can use the "AT&T Yahoo! Small Business" IMAP server as long as you have a AT&T Yahoo account.

See http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/att/smallbus ... op-39.html and http://kb.mozillazine.org/Yahoo

The downside is if you ever call the AT&T help line they might not want to help you if you mention you're using a IMAP account.

I looked into using IMAP but it seems about the same as accessing att.yahoo email. IOW I cannot save the email on my PC which I need to do in a few situations.

If I manage to get through to someone at AT&T that seems helpful is there any way to properly explain the problem in AT&T technical jargon in order to get this resolved?

By default a copy of your messages are saved as offline folders if you have a IMAP account. This is controlled through the tools -> account settings -> account_name -> synchronization & storage settings. It will save offline folders using mbox files just like a POP account does. If you are working online it display the contents of remote folders (same as what webmail has). If you are working offline (file ->offline -> work offline) it displays the contents of the offline folder instead of the corresponding remote folder.

The one gotcha is that if you delete a message in a remote folder the message in the corresponding offline folder is also deleted, since they are synch'd. If that is a issue, use something like Mozbackup to backup your profile. See http://kb.mozillazine.org/IMAP_backup for more details
