Thunderbird very slow

For some reason my Thunderbird has become very slow when I either delete a number of messages or try to view an email with a number of pictures. I can hear my hard-drive pulsing back and forth and I am unable to do anything in Thunderbird until it stops. Any idea what could cause this. I have already run defrag, so that is not it. I am running Windows 7 on a desk top computer, and have run each update to the program as it was announced.

What version of Thunderbird? Check under Help->About Thunderbird.
Is that a POP or IMAP type account you are accessing?
Do you regularly compact the message folders? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Compacting_folders

I am running version 24.6.0. I am trying to compact the folders to see if that solves the problem. Thanks, I will be back to you if it works.
