I have to admit I just upgraded to 38.4 and got this damn asterix too - wish i could roll back 1 version
I have 11 imap accounts and it only appears on one and disappears if i collapse the child folders - its highly annoying . I don't even have any unread in any child folders on that account and its damn annoying that it totals all child folders and not just the inbox
What does asterisk mean in Inbox (*12)

What I did t minimize that was:
- Unubscribed all the folders I do not need or use, like "All Mail" or "Starred" on GMail;
- Marked as read all emails I had laying around.
This is not a solution, but solved a part of the problem.

Any information on whether this bug will ever get fixed, or should I stick with setting the following to false:
- mail.folderpane.sumSubfolders
