Dan, thanks for the info, but i never got to use it.
Actually, i got Christian, the customer support guy at SpamArrest, to downgrade
Tbird from 38.1 back to 31.7 for me.
He took over my pc with a screen sharing program (Access, i think) and did it in a
few minutes. Great tech support at Spam Arrest. I informed them of the problem
yesterday and today it was fixed.
Upgraded to 38.1: stuck in looking for folders....

It would be nice if the spamarest folks would point you to a support article describing the problem, so that everyone can follow and thus we would know when they fix the issue. Does such a link exist?

you're not alone and I'm so fed up with this issue that i'm dusting off Outlook 2010.
I've been experiencing this same "looking for folders" on IMAP account issue for a while.
I'm a former programmer, and all my money says it's a glitch in the code, not a user error.

I have stumbled across this thread while suffering what sounds like exactly the same problem. The difference is that it is now 2017, I am using Thunderbird 52.1.0 with Windows 10 (NOT the big new update which I have not received yet) and my email provider is BT.
