the above brings up a screen, where you have to again enter the bug number of 459716
"Bug 457916 - NPN_PostURL custom headers require "Content-Length", but that's not documented" is unrelated. Its about problems when loading urls from a browser plugin. Nothing to do with Thunderbird.

We have multiple flavors and versions of Linux and from Windows XP through 10 running on our users' desktops. So far, I have not had one report from a Linux-based installation of TBird. In Windows - the version, in combination with the TBird version are all over the place so we cannot nail it down to versions of anything. In some offices I have ONE person out of 25 with the SMTP error. In other offices, I have 4 out of 15. In a couple of offices using VPN to get in, I have 2 out of 10 users experiencing this.

Several of our System Administrators and Tech Support folks have wasted HOURS trying to piece the common denominator(s) together, in the hopes of finding the "cure", to no avail. Typing "Thunderbird" and "SMTP" in any search engine returns countless responses. We all wade through as many as we can, making changes to settings in both Thunderbird and security settings that were not changed and have worked for years, but now suddenly don't. Very frustrating and time-consuming restarting TBird and Computers...
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/buglist.cg ... tp+timeout doesn't appear to list anything recent. I also searched on just "smtp" and then again on just "send" and looked at bug reports for the last 6 months - nothing seems to match. Did you submit a bug report at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org ? It would help if you submitted one that had a smtp log file as an attachment, and identified what smtp server (for example, Postfix 3.1.1) you were using.

I did not file a bug report. We will do our best to gather log files from some who are having the problem and send along with server information.

Hello,

I reported this some time ago, I'm a Mac user and sometimes I have this issue as well.

I have the same account (Hotmail or Outlook) in Mail (the default OSX mail client) and never gives up, I don't know which formula uses but Mail always can send the mail.

I've noticed that some days Microsoft servers works flawlessly in Thunderbird, other days can't sent any mail and have to use the other email client.

Having the same issue here, on TB 45.4.0. It's fortunately rare, but attempts to send some emails end in SMTP timeout errors - but writing and sending a new email, from and to the same addresses, will go through fine. I've been working on the assumption that it was somehow related to Gmail, since in my case it's the smtp.gmail.com that's timing out, but what's odd (or maybe this is normal, but it seems odd to me) is that if I edit the draft of an email that refuses to send to change both the destination address and the account I'm sending it from - in this case, from Gmail to Hotmail, and then to my ISP's domain - it still refuses to send. So it seems to be a TB bug that impacts individual emails and then "hangs on" once it's in place - forgive the non-technical descriptions. Has anyone made any progress in figuring out why this is happening, or what to do about it?

Changing the recipient and the From: address doesn't effect what SMTP server is used to send the message. If you moved a draft message to another accounts drafts folder, and then edited and sent it, that would be a different story.

I wouldn't expect anybody to try to do anything about this problem without a bug report being filed that has a SMTP log file attached.

Hi

I have the same issue linked to SMTP timeout in Thunderbird since 2 years now.
This happens when sending emails with attachment(s) and via Ethernet connection.
When sending the same email with attachments via WIFI, it is OK

I use Windows 10 & Thunderbird 45
My SMTP settings (Yahoo):
• Port 465
• Password normal
• Security SSL/TLS

Additional remarks
- Sending email without attachment via Ethernet + Thunderbird → OK
- Sending email with attachment via Ethernet + Thunderbird → NOK
- Sending email with attachment via WIFI + Thunderbird → OK

To sum up:
- My SMTP settings seems correct because sending an email with an attachment via WIFI works
- This seems not to be linked to the antivirus because it is working via WIFI
- This seems not to be linked to local network because with another machine on the same network it is working
- Getting also this error ssl_error_bad_mac_alert when browsing on https websites leads me to an issue with SSL using Ethernet connection only

Extra testing: I have enabled logging for SMTP on Thunderbird. When I send an email with 4 pictures attached (total size 1 Mo), I have noticed some differences between Ethernet / WIFI

Why sending an email with ethernet is stopped at this point:
- SMTP entering state: 8
- SMTP Send: .

In Thunderbird console, I can see this when I get the timeout message
SSL_ERROR_BAD_MAC_ALERT

Do I have a timeout linked to SSL that happens only with Ethernet connection ?
How can I avoid the error SSL_ERROR_BAD_MAC_ALERT ?

:-k

Thanks for reading

Any help is welcome ;-)

Hello again,

Sorry to hijack the above topic, but some months ago (july) I reported an issue with Hotmail SMTP protocol (sending mails), I've been having the same errors using Thunderbird but not in Mail (default email program)

Finally I decided to search more for clue and generate a log file in Thunderbird and Mail (OSX default mail program), Mail always get the work done sending mails I don't know why :) , my default email program is Thunderbird.

Here are the results:

Sending the mail from Hotmail to a Gmail with 3 small attachments (.png images)

After some seconds I got this screen error alert

Image

The log file:

Code: Select all

2107323136[1003cc370]: SMTP Connecting to: smtp-mail.outlook.com
---------

Now sending the same email using Mail program (successfully)

Log file:

Just for the records.
Tested the previous version (45.2.0) and works flawlessly sending my Hotmail or Outlook mails

Where can I report this issue to be fixed in the next release?

File a bug report at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/ . If you do that please post a link to it (or the bug report number).

I suggest you include what security.tls.version.fallback-limit is set to (find this using the config editor) when submitting the bug report. See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Security.tls.version.* A SSL_ERROR_BAD_MAC_ALERT error can occur if both sides don't support the same ciphers.

Hello tanstaafl

The security.tls.version.fallback-limit in the 45.2.0 version is set to 3

I have no idea what's the value in the latest Thunderbird version, could you please verify for me (so I don't have to update and then downgrade?)

Thanks

It is 3 in version 45.5.1. If you change it to 1 using the config editor it will enable using TLS version 1.0 (an older version of TLS). If using a newer version of TLS fails (for example the server doesn't support TLS version 1.2) it will try to use that version.

Does ANYONE have a solution? I am a tech at a small I.T. company, and I just got a call yesterday from one of my clients. He is having this exact same issue - using gmail - even can send a very small message, but, as soon as there's an attachment or anything - no-go! We upgraded T-bird yesterday from 38.x to the latest (and greatest?) - did not appear to make a difference - HOWEVER, he called me this morning and told me that now it was working! So... ??? - This is bound to happen again. I see this thread has been going on for a year! And no solution? What's going on? :(
