Folders/Files have disappeared!

Win XP is SP3.
Which version should I go back to? According to viewtopic.php it's supposed to be 38.5, right?
Current version is 45.5.1

Since you have SP3 you can install any version you want. If you think you need to workaround a problem by using a earlier version I suggest using the prior major version, in which case I'd suggest version 38.8.0. The windows usa-english setup program for version 38.8.0 is at http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/ ... n32/en-US/

Should I uninstall the current version first or can I install 38.8.0 over it?

You can install it over the existing version but I suggest you install it in a seperate directory so that you can easily switch between the two to compare results.
