Attach files over network bug (Mac)

Post by Xtro1975 »

Hi I am using Thunderbird on Mac OS 10.6.8 64bit and I noticed could not attach files that are on a smb network in another Windows computer. When I am writing an email and click the clip to attach the file it just shows all my network shares greyed out and cannot do nothing more. If I just drag the file from the Mac Os finder window to the email it is correctly attached but not as practical, because some times I need to dowload attached files to my internal hard disc and then copy it again to the smb share. I noticed this problem started from Thunderbird 41.0b2 , with 41.0b1 it works OK and I am using it at the moment. It will help to solve that bug in newer versions as 45.7

When I was using Mac OS 10.6.8 32bit never had this problem, and I think the Thunderbird version was superior to 41 but don't remember exactly.

Kind regards

Are the network shares visible in "Finder"? Can you navigate to one of those folders and open it using Finder? If not, then Thunderbird is not going to be aware of them.

The "advanced options" and the "tips" section in https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204445 (need to page down a bit to see it) might help. Fix inaccessible and grayed out folders in the OS X Finder might also be useful. Sorry I can't suggest something more specific but I don't have a Mac.

Moved from Thunderbird Bugs to Thunderbird Support since you are much more likely to get help from a Mac user in the Thunderbird Support forum. The Thunderbird Bugs forum is really meant just for discussing workarounds for a confirmed bug reported in https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/ .

Of course the network shares are perfectly visible in the finder, in fact I can attach files from Thunderbird 41.0b1 downwards but not from Thunderbird 41.0b2 upwards. With Mail.app it works OK too, the problem is only with Thunderbird 41.0b2 and newer versions.
If I drag a file from the finder to Thunderbird 41.0b2 and newer it works too, but cannot navigate through the network shares from Thunderbird itself.

The closest bug I could find is https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1106613 where remotely mounted volumes from a Samba server are not listed and cannot be accessed in the attachment pane, under OSX 10.9 with Thunderbird 31.*. It seems to get a directory snapshot when TB starts, and is not refreshed or refresh-able after that. If a remote mount drops for any reason, there is no way to recover it in the Attachment dialog. If an item is added to a folder, it does not show in the attachment dialog.

I suggest you file a bug report at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/ . If you do that please post a link to it.

Looks fine, though I would have made it a priority two ("We want this, but it's not totally clear or extremely important") instead of a priority one. If somebody confirms the bug they will adjust the priority as necessary. Thanks.
