OK, the Chrome browser's cache has absolutely nothing to do with Thunderbird.

Where are you seeing this unread message, in the Inbox folder or elsewhere?
How is the account set up in Thunderbird, as POP or IMAP? Find out using menu path Tools->Account Settings->Server Settings->Server Type at the top right of the dialogue.

Select the folder, then right-click, Properties (or Edit/Folder Properties), then click Repair Folder and see if that helps.

Keep in mind that if it's an IMAP folder, the repair will re-download all the headers, so for a large folder it might take a few minutes.

Yes the (well hidden) menu option mentioned (repair) fixed this.. Appreciated

Now I need to post a new thread for the many other ways TB is going completely insane now

Nope - the repair didnt work - as mentioned - and Ive had to give up on this bug.

In my other posts on other TB issues - like exchange lack of features and missing autoresponders that wont work (yes Ive read all the suggestions here and elsewhere that dont work) I have decided to abandon TB and move back to OSX mail which does just work and all of these problems have now vanished. TB is great but not when it becomes an accumulation of frustrating bug hunts that defy extensive and determined attempts to resolve by dedicated but ultimately non technical users. The time-vampire has one, and I'm now swicthed to OSX Mail

My thanks to the very kind offers and suggestions. I tried. They didnt work sadly.
