When you click on a link in Thunderbird it sends a call to the operating system to launch the default browser. See this link to set the default browser -- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Setting_Your_Default_Browser

That may require the TabMix Plus extension.

that addon is crap and essentially it does not offer the functionality I need
instead of blurping addons you assume are relevant, I would prefer people who know what they are talking about

Dan is not only a moderator but has more real knowledge than many here. Instead of being a rude little demanding child try growing up you unpleasant excuse for a human

firefoxuse:

I deleted the report that you made against mailliz, and ignored the insult you made in it. You're asking for help from strangers, on a free product. Please keep that in mind when you don't like the suggestions they make.

Check what browser.tabs.loadInBackground is set to, using about:config. It defaults to true. Or try the add-on that Dan suggested. It appears to also manage that.

My advice is to stop insulting people yourself. Wonder why people won't help you anymore?

Volunteers. The same unpaid individuals who have been trying to help you and receiving insults in response. You won't need "protection" if you keep a civil attitude and try working with those folks instead of offering abuse.

Well, expect all you like.
Unless you start to act in a civil manner, you will NOT receive any more help here.
Plus, I am seriously considering giving you a warning for the insult to Dan.
But, I will leave that open......for the time being.

See:
browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external

The meaning of the value of browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external is the same as of browser.link.open_newwindow
