TB not accepting PWs although they're stored

Post by lovemyfoxy »

In a previous thread I talked about Verizon mail switchover to AIM/AOL server. I chose to stay with Vz, backed up my profile folder, wiped out my PWs on TB, haven't changed any usernames. Typed in the new PW, same for all 3 accounts, getting message on all 3:

"Sending of username failed. Mail server pop.verizon.net responded[AUTH] Authentication failed."

So you have successfully migrated your Verizon email accounts to AOL, and can log into each account on web mail?

Do you have @verizon.net as part of the User Name in the Accounts Server Settings in Thunderbird? You just need the part of the user name before @verizon.net.

Don't forget to change the password for the smtp.verizon.net in the Outgoing Server setting in Thunderbird, once you get the receiving mail problem solved. :)

No, and no. I finally found a combo of username and PW to get onto the Vz site. But there's no intelligent help at the Vz forums, and no one who's posted there is using TB. Now I see why so many people use webmail.

We're Mozilla diehards. When I first set up my accounts here years ago, a very patient lady, the one who uses a black cat's face for her avatar and lives in Wisconsin, stayed with me a week, till we got it right. At that time. Vz refused to support TB, and said they would help me only in OE. And they had some strange settings.

I don't use webmail except when TB misbehaves. I did as I said in my first post, then changed them back and mail resumed.

Just saw your reply. What did I do wrong?

I tried setting up my account in AIM mail, they said the account already exists. But they wouldn't accept either PW, new or old.

The username probably has to be the full email address. That is quite common, and matches what they entered in step 7 (john.doe@verizon.net) in the IMAP instructions.

For what it's worth, my AOL account has these settings in TB:
incoming IMAP server: imap.aol.com on port 993, SSL/TLS, normal password authentication, User name = part of address before the @
outgoing SMTP server: smtp.aol.com on port 465, SSL/TLS, normal password authentication, User name = part of address before the @

These settings are different (using the same servers) from what AOL recommends for Verizon:

No you didn't migrate. [-X

It looks like you didn't follow instructions when you received the notification email from Verizon.

First step is logging into your Verizon Email account in a web browser.
Second step is following the steps for Option 1 to keep your current address and POP accounts.
Option 1. Keep your current email address with AOL Mail.

By choosing this option you will:

Keep your verizon.net email address
Migrate to AOL Mail
Retain email, contacts and calendar(s) automatically
Third step is receiving the Verification code and doing whatever it is you are supposed to do with it. I forget, it has been weeks since I migrated my verizon.net account over to AOL.

Then you need to change the password to the new one for your Verizon accounts in Thunderbird. You will get a prompt if you try to Get Messages or Send mail. Then you are all done.

You can't use a username@verizon.net address with an aol.com server. For POP accounts the incoming server will be pop.verizon.net, imap.verizon.net for IMAP and smtp.verizon.net for the outgoing server. Username does not need @verizon.net.

Day 3-

@WaltS48
Some of the problems: When I got the original email, I couldn't get into the site's login. I went through 4 PW's with accompanying email confirmations. Then the page wouldn't download fully, and the only word I can use is "bouncing." I switched to Chrome, and the whole process just got lost at about 4 AM.

I usually try to avoid Vz's site, because it's so flaky. They keep "improving" it. For a while last year, they redirected all webmail logins, and you had to go through a bunch of full-page ads before you could read your webmail.

I finally logged into my webmail several times on FF, but I'm not getting the redirect to the options page. When I find the options page myself through other links, all I have is the FAQ page.

..................................

You haven't done it in a while, so maybe @tanstaaffl can help.

1-- I've already tried changing my PW at TB, and that doesn't work, although the other new settings were accepted

2--Do I register at the aol page, and is that where I make a new PW?
I have AOL's registration page open, will leave it till your someone relies. Should I register there, and with what username? My main acct name at VZ minus "@verizon.net"?
https://i.aol.com/reg/signup?ncid=txtln ... ode=825329
No mention of AIM.

I think Vz mail is doomed, with tens of millions of subscribers trying to figure this out. The Vz forum is in total chaos. ](*,)

I tried using the AIM signup link based on passing arguments to my.screenname.aol.com from the http://kb.mozillazine.org/Using_AOL_and_AIM_mail KB article and it goes to a https://www.aol.com/ error message. Clicking on email options at https://settings.aim.com/ also goes to a AOL web page. http://mail.aim.com/ now goes to a AOL web page.

I clicked on a "AIM has evolved. Learn more at aim.com." link at https://aim.uservoice.com/forums/139658 ... im-anymore and it took me to https://my.screenname.aol.com/_cqr/logi ... olta-en-us . Its get a AIM account link now leads to a web page that is only for AIM messaging, it requires you to enter an existing email address. The posts at https://aim.uservoice.com/forums/139658 ... im-anymore also complain about not being able to check for new mail at AIM webmail anymore, and AOL deleting their stored messages.

I suspect AIM mail might have devolved into becoming just another legacy domain for AOL mail. You can't sign up for a free account in it anymore as far as I can tell. I tried signing up for an AOL account (so that I could test using it in Thunderbird) and it required a valid mobile phone number. I'm not willing to give them that information.

Sorry for your problems with your My Verizon login.

It has been 18 days since I received the Notification email in my Verizon account in Thunderbird.

I clicked the "here" link in the email that was in this sentence.
Click here to sign into your verizon.net email account.
Once logged in you go to your Email not the Options page, I think there is a notification on the Email page if Verizon is migrating accounts in your area. It has been 18 days since I received the email. Or just find the email in your web mail and follow instructions

I have no clue what you are talking about in regards to ads, and improving the site and it isn't relevant.

Then you follow instructions

Following the steps for Option 1 to keep your current address and POP accounts.

It appears I am the only Verizon user that has migrated their account over to AOL that is trying to provide support.

Sorry I can't help you, if you haven't followed the instructions and migrated you Verizon account.

If a user has multiple accounts, they probably each received a Notification email for each account and need to be migrated separately.

I believe Option 2 is If you just want to setup AOL accounts and lose your verizon.net address.
1-- I've already tried changing my PW at TB, and that doesn't work, although the other new settings were accepted
What other settings? You can't use a verizon.net address with aol.com server settings. You still use the verizon.net server settings you already had in Thunderbird.

I believe the mobile # is optional. Nor will I give AOL my full name.
Is that the page where I'm supposed to change my PW's?

There is no notification on any of my 3 email accounts, and that negates much of what you wrote.

This notification that other people have received says I should change my PW's in TB.
https://help.aol.com/articles/verizon-m ... ation-pop3

I tried doing that and it doesn't work. No mail went in either direction, so I changed them back. I'm missing some kind of connection between the beginning and end of this process.

I mentioned Vz's website problems because it's chaotic and almost totally nonfunctional. Information is minimal and often outdated, and many links get redirected to irrelevant places, most often to ads. They admit that one of their "Contact us" links goes to an AI.

@LoveMyFoxy

You previously posted Verizon is dropping email after 3/31 • mozillaZine Forums were you stated you received a notification.

I took that to mean you received the notification email in your Verizon account in Thunderbird with the instructions on how to migrate your Verizon account to AOL.

Verizon Move to AOL Mail - FAQs - AOL Help

The Subject of the email I received is;
Important notice regarding your verizon.net email service
Body of the email contains;
Option 1. Keep your current email address with AOL Mail.

By choosing this option you will:

Keep your verizon.net email address
Migrate to AOL Mail
Retain email, contacts and calendar(s) automatically

Option 2. Try any other email provider.

By choosing this option, you will:

No longer be able to use your current verizon.net email address
Establish an account with a mail provider of your choosing like Outlook.com or Gmail
Manually move your email, contacts and calendar(s)

To confirm this message is valid, visit verizon.com and select Announcements under the Tools section at the bottom of the page.
After I migrated my account using Option 1, I did have to change my password in Thunderbird, because the migration steps required I create a new password. I have seen reports that indicated users just used the same password.

I'm not sure what you are trying to do, but I do know you can't use a verizon.net address with aol.com server settings in Thunderbird. If/when a user migrates, they keep the verizon.net address and server settings in Thunderbird.

Not all Verizon users are being migrated at the same time. It is a staged migration.

If you didn't get the notification to migrate, pardon my misunderstanding and sorry I can't be of any further assistance.
