Hi!

I'm getting an error on starting Thunderbird (Earlybird, current version):

XML Parsing Error: undefined entity
Location: chrome://messenger/content/messenger.xul
Line Number 297, Column 15: <toolbar id="folderPane-toolbar"

Steps tried:
- reboot system (Win7 64bit)
- deactivate antivirus (Avast)
- reinstall Thunderbird as described in the knowledge base (deleted the program files without using the Thunderbird deinstaller, downloaded installer and installed)
- tried starting in safe mode (safe mode window appears asking whether I want to continue in safe mode; upon confirmation it goes back to the error stated above)

The next thing I'd try is a complete deinstallation and a complete reinstall, however I remember from my last computer change that putting the old profile (containing mail of >10 years in about two dozen folders and weighing about 8GB) back in is quite some mess, so maybe there's something else I could try beforehand?

I suggest you install the normal production release (52.0) in a different directory and see if it has the same problem. If it has the same problem:

See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_in_use . You might have a parent.lock file in your profile, leftover from something failing or crashing. The reason re-install doesn't help is it automatically reuses your old profile, which has your downloaded mail, settings, address books, saved passwords, installed add-ons etc.

See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Toolbar_or_wi ... ot_working . You might need to delete the xulstore.json file.

Production release (though it identifies as 45.8.0?) installed and started just fine with everything working as it should. Earlybird continues to have its problem. I tried deleting parent.lock and xulstore.json from my profile anyway, but it changed nothing.

I forgot https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/ is still at 48.5.0 because they haven't fully rolled out 52.0 to all users yet. I got the upgrade because I used "check for upgrades" in help -> about Thunderbird. They typically stagger the release in order to get feedback from some users before trying to have everybody automatically upgrade.

Earlybird builds are nightly builds. They're hit or miss (inherently buggy), and not formally tested. That is why there is a separate forum (Thundebird Builds) devoted to them. It has a sticky thread devoted to the status of daily builds for each week.See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Go_back_to_an ... hunderbird for where to get the setup program for 52.0 if you'd like to use that rather than Earlybird.

Thanks, I'll look into the other board. I'm aware of the alpha status of Earlybird, I've been using Earlybird and Aurora for several years now to help through the telemetry - though I actually have never encountered any serious problems before now!
