Thunderbird Crashes on startup - Windows 7 update?

Post by LYNNEV »

Thunderbird stopped working about 5-6 days ago. Ive tried getting the latest TB update. Ive tried safe
mode and disabling add-ons. Still wont start. I've uninstalled and got the latast version - still crashes
on trying to startup. I've uninistalled and tried to reinstall an older .exe version from another computer.
It may be a coinincidence - but it seemed to happen after a Windows 7 update. I've updated Windows
again today to the latest - still no luck. I've sent a crash report to Mozilla with my email address but
no-one has responded. Please help - I don't want to use Outlook!!
Here's the latest creash report:

I edited your post to wrap any long lines in it.

Does it crash or does it not start? If the latter the problem might be a leftover parent.lock file in the profile from the crash that you need to delete. Thats a temporary file created when Thunderbird starts and normally deleted automatically when it exits. If it detects that file exists when it starts it aborts, making the assumption another copy of Thunderbird is already running. See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_in_use for more information.

If the problem is due to a windows 7 update that is tougher to debug. I'd start by running windows in safe mode, and see what effect that has. It will use generic drivers rather than card specific graphics drivers for example. Your anti-virus program is also another potential culprit, especially if it is configured to scan email. What anti-virus scanner do you use?

If none of this helps see if you can run the profile manager. See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Manager for how to do that. If you can run the profile manager then we can help you create a new profile and move your old mail and address books to it. That works around many problems.

version 52.0 is now available from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/ . While I'm skeptical your problem is version specific you could also try uninstalling Thunderbird 48.5 and running the setup program. It will automatically use your existing profile (which has your mail, address books, settings, add-ons etc.).

If you post your crash ID there is some hope that we can tell why you are crashing.
Without it, one can only speculate as to the cause.
Please see https://support.mozilla.org/t5/Troubles ... sh-reports
(Unfortuantely the information in your original post doesn't inclulde crash ID - not your fault, it's a common issue)

What you just posted isn't a crash ID, and isn't helpful.
Please read the URL I posted - the instructions are simple
