Thunderbird Update Resets some things...

Post by dmemphis »

For months an elderly user has been complaining that his compose window reduces out of
full screen and the Message Pane enables - all on their own.
I was convinced he was doing this inadvertently then just this week- or that the
user profile was getting whacked randomly. (which I have written about before).
It all became clear when the user managed to send me a
screen shot that had the Thunderbird "welcome" page in the message pane.
--- these two behaviors were caused by the Automatic Update.

This user has a hard time with controlling windows and screen layout, so it is very
upsetting. You should see what I have had to do to get the person to be able to
send me screen shots! So remembering F8 to control the Message Pane, and the maximize button to restore the compose screen to full screen is really too much. His stuff needs to stay put.
(There is also the compose screen address list that F11 controls- the address list also
mysteriously gets turned off. I'm not sure how)

I suspect the compose window resize following the update might be considered a bug
- an update should not reset the last used compose window size in my opinion.

The "Welcome" message display, which is done by enabling the message pane, well perhaps there is just another way to display this message so a user doesn't have to dismiss the message pane
if they don't prefer having it.

Further, I'd really love a lock button/menu item that would prevent the screen layout from changing,
There is a precedent: locking a spreadsheet so that the cells are protected.

What do you think?
