Thunderbird fails to open correctly

Post by thommycz »

I have Thunderbird connected to 2 gmail accounts with few thousands emails.
Sometime like month ago it started to failing during startup. Ending in state shown on screenshot.

I don't know where to find some error message which would be helpful to solving issue or reporting a bug.

If I try restart Thunderbird several times it is able to start correctly.
It happens also using safe mode.
I tried to download nightly version and create new profile. It doesn't helped also.

Today I needed to restart it seven times to get it working, and then it forget settings like ordering in email list.
During one start it died with exception:

I am using Mac OS Sierra on Mac Pro 2013.

Thank you for help.

How is the account set up in Thunderbird, as POP or IMAP? Find out using menu path Tools->Account Settings->Server Settings->Server Type at the top right of the dialogue.

Changing to a Nightly version would be the last thing I would recommend as a way to diagnose/fix a problem with Thunderbird. As a beta version, the Nightlies are more likely to have unresolved bugs/regressions/issues than the current release versions. You should consider reverting to the current release version, 52.2.1.

Clear the browser cache
Shutdown any anti-virus software you are running.
Download a new copy of the full installer from http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/
Run the installer.
Restart the anti-virus program.

Note that your saved messages, address books, settings, passwords, etc (if any) are stored in a different directory from the program files and will not be removed by deleting the directory identified above.

Okey, I will try steps you written about. Only thing i didn't get is what directory you mean in "Note that your saved messages, address books, settings, passwords, etc (if any) are stored in a different directory from the program files and will not be removed by deleting the directory identified above."

I am using IMAP connection.

Today I found ActivityManager in the Nightly version and in it I found after start, that it writes activities like this for all of my tags:
Deleted folder inbox
Deleted folder Important

So maybe this should be pointer to issue also.

I tried Nightly version because of this document:

Hi thommycz,
You said...

For reference...

It's the way that both Firefox & Thunderbird function
& where most "problems" arise.
[Ancient Amateur Astronomer.]
Win-10-H/64 bit/500G SSD/16 Gig Ram/450Watt PSU/350WattUPS/Firefox-115.0.2/T-bird-115.3.2./SnagIt-v10.0.1/MWP-7.12.125.

(Always choose the "Custom" Install.)

I tried Nightly version because of this document:

OK, for one thing, nothing in that document suggests using Nightlies as a way to overcome problems. It suggests switching to a nightly before posting a bug report.

For another things, that's an archived copy of an article from 2008 so it's hardly up to date advice.
