Valid RSS Feed Not Working in Thunderbird

Post by hettical »

I'm trying to get an RSS feed working for a site https://judeochristianclarion.com/feed/rss.xml, and am testing it in Thunderbird.

The XML is completely valid according to the W3 Validator https://validator.w3.org/feed/check.cgi ... %2Frss.xml

When I check the feed in Feedly and QuiteRSS, it works perfectly fine. But in Thunderbird I keep getting the message "The Feed URL is not authorized" and it refuses to get the info from the feed. I use Thunderbird for other RSS feeds, and have not had this issue with any other sites.

I tried copying the exact same xml file to another domain http://cmhett.tk/rss.xml, and from this domain I did not receive the error message in Thunderbird, and it worked fine just like any other RSS feed.

I tried it on Windows 10 Thunderbird 52.2.1 (32-bit) as well as Solus Linux Thunderbird 52.1.1 (64-bit), and I am getting the same error message in both.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

I just created a "blogs and news feeds" account using that URL using Thunderbird 52.1.1 (32-bit) under Windows 10 and it worked fine. It returned 5 new messages, all of which were readable. Try running in safe mode (help -> restart with add-ons disabled) to see if the problem is a side effect of an add-on.

I couldn't find a relevant bug with a quick search of https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/

Thanks, this did the trick. Disabling the Lightning add-on fixed the problem. However, since that's the default calendar add-on, I would like to be sure nobody else would be encountering this issue who has it installed. Should I take this issue to the Calendar subforum?

Yes, please. I'm using the ReminderFox calendar add-on by the way, which didn't cause any problems.

They marked that as a duplicate of https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1306952 , which is marked invalid. I suggest you add some comments to the second bug report to answer any questions. According to one of the comments setting calendar.useragent.extra blank worksaround the problem.

I don't have a lot of knowledge about bugzilla, so I'm just wondering, was this https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1306952 bug marked invalid because it was filed for thunderbird in general, whereas it should have been filed specifically under Lightning or calendar? Obviously this isn't an isolated incident, and I'm just wondering if I need to file a separate bug report.

The problem isn't what product you wrote it against. Its that your bug report was essentially ignored because they had problems getting additional information for a older bug report about the same problem, written against the same product. I re-opened the newer bug report with the following comment:"

This bug report was essentially closed by marking it as "resolved duplicate" of another bug report. If the older bug report was being worked on that would be fine. However, it was marked "resolved invalid" 10 months ago due to lack of additional information from the author.

I believe marking this bug report as "resolved duplicate" (even though its a duplicate) is a mistake as it effectively means the problem is being treated as WON'T FIX without anybody explicitly making that decision in any of the bug reports.

There is somebody else in http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic ... &t=3031947 who has a similar problem under Linux. I could not duplicate the problem using the same RSS feed while using ReminderFox (a different calendar add-on) under Windows 10

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1306952#c4 mentions "The Thunderbird user agent string is changed with the addition of Lightning, and the server breaks on that." My Thunderbird user agent string is Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; WOW64; rv:52.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/52.2.1. Apparently ReminderFox doesn't modify it like Lightning does."

I'm not the one who filed that bug report, but appreciate the clarification and the comment in the bugzilla thread. I will keep an eye on that. In the meantime, I will probably take a look at how my server is configured to see if I can fix it that way.

Thank you for all the help!
