erasing inbox

Is there a way to "bulk erase" the in box??? My inbox has close to 9,000 messages that I want to erase

Use Control-A or edit->select->all to select all of the messages in the current folder (the inbox). Then delete the messages. If you want to avoid them being moved to trash hold down the Shift key when you delete them. Since all of the messages are selected you can delete them in one step.
