Line spacing in message pane. Tbird v52.2.1.

Could someone explain a little about userchrome.css? (Like where it is, how to make changes, what kind of file is it, etc.) I have a new laptop on which I installed Thunderbird 52.2.1. My problem is how the message pane looks (the top part). It seems like the lines are pretty far apart. On my old computer (same screen size) I could see more messages in the list. I'm trying to figure out how to change the line spacing (or maybe the icon size -- it might be the folder icons that are too large). I welcome all the help I can get.
