Performance problem due to index

Why does Thunderbird make it so difficult? My program is running very slow, so I want to recreate the index. I find one instruction which tells me to find my profile, but not where. Then I find the profile, and am more confused.

Can anyone give me numbered instructions on how to re-index my files? My profile is ivker24.default, I think!

Maybe I am stupid, but going from one instruction to another is very confusing!

Why do you believe rebuilding the index will improve performance?
When/where is it slow? For example is it slow opening folders, slow searching folders, or is it slow when trying to compose a message?

Are you talking about the global search index or the individual index files for each folder? Rebuilding the index file for each folder (aka repair folder button) can fix corrupted folder listings but usually has no performance impact and doesn't fix corrupted mail folders (which are stored in the file named after the folder with no file extension).

Thunderbird stops working quite often for about a minute or less, and the blue band near the top of the window gets smaller. Then it goes back to normal and functions. Also, while I am typing, sometimes there is a delay before the typed letters appear on the screen. I looked up how to reindex the files, but the instructions go from one to another. It would be nice if there was one posted solution that contained all the info for how to do this. Again, why is Thunderbird such a good program, but also so difficult to fix or understand?

I think the "blue band" you refer to is the window title bar. I doubt reindexing is going to help you.
