Yesterday I decided to improve my security, and switched on Microsoft Two-step Verification. I then used their password app to restart my Hotmail account in Thunderbird. All seemed to go well until I noticed that, although I could receive Hotmail email, I could not send. I always got the error message "Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp-mail.outlook.com timed out. Try again".
I removed and reinstalled the Hotmail account in TB several times, but the problem persisted. Finally in frustration I went back to Microsoft and turned off Two-step Verification. But that made no difference. I still can't send Hotmail email.
The problem does not occur in other apps set up to use Hotmail (e.g. Calibre and another email client), so I assume it's something wrong with my SMTP settings in Thunderbird. They are:
Server: smtp-mail.outlook.com
Port: 465
Security: SS/TLS
Authentication: Normal Password
User Name: my_name@hotmail.co.uk
Can anybody see anything wrong with that, or suggest any other solution?
Thanks
