Thunderbird does not show me the message as I composed it

I have changed the font to the one I want to compose my messages. But when I receive it, Thunderbird doesn't show the message in the font that I composed it.

Display -> Formatting ...

I don't know where I'm going wrong to tell the program to receive the message exactly as I composed it.

Are you composing the message in HTML format or plain text? Tools->Account Settings->Composition & Addressing
If in HTML, have you selected View->Message body as->Original HTML?

In the Font & Encodings dialog do you have a checkmark in "Allow messages to use other fonts"?

Okay I got it going now. I checked the box next to "Allow messages to use other fonts." Works okay now.

I monkeyed with all this yesterday but it wasn't working.

Powerful email program that's for sure. I was unaware that you could configure to this degree.

But I wish I could tone down the background color to an off white. I mean not just the bottom pane but the whole interface. And it appears that you have to choose one of the colors they supply. You can't type in your own Hex Code.
