I can't setup Gmail in TB on Laptop

Post by john9210 »

I have set up TB to use Gmail on my Win 10 desktop computer with no problems, but cannot set it up an account on my Win 10 HP laptop  .

I get the message TB cannot validate the settings. I’m using the File>New>Existing mail account to set it up. The connect to Google window opens but won’t connect to Google.
I can log on to Gmail with FireFox, using my user name and password, so I know they are correct. Any suggestions on how I can fix this?

I think you have to allow the access:

See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Gmail

Are you using OAuth2 for authentication? It requires cookies to be enabled for google.com.

If you are using "normal password" you need to log into https://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps using a browser and select "Allow to let less secure apps access your Google account", as mentioned in the preceding post.

On my desktop, I’ve easily setup a gmail account in TB but, I still cannot set it up on my laptop. IMAP is enabled in Gmail and allow less secure aps is on.
During setup, TB successfully looks up provider configuration info. The MailAccount Setup window shows:
Incoming: IMAP imap.gmail.com Port: 993 SSL: SSL/TLS Auth: OAuth2
Outgoing:SMTP smtp.gmail.com Port: 465 SSL: SSL/TLS Auth: OAuth2
However, when I click the Re-test button, checking password never ends. It just keeps going and going. It also opens a window for Google sign in but the window is essentially frozen. Clicking the Next button, presumably to enter a password, is unresponsive.

Check that cookies are enabled (tools -> options -> privacy) for google.com in Thunderbird.

Alternatively, select "normal password" instead of OAuth2 for authentication since "allow less secure apps" is enabled. That will eliminate the google popup.
