Quicken Deluxe Version: R6
Cannot get dropdown boxes when trying to change preferences. They disappear!
Any ideas what is wrong and how to fix it?

Sorry, what does Quicken Deluxe Version: R6 have to do with Thunderbird? Does it have an extension that is added to Thunderbird?
What version of Thunderbird?
Have you tried disabling hardware acceleration in Thunderbird, using menu path Tools->Options->Advanced->General?
