Is it possible you could send me the url for an XP compatible version of Firefox.

I did that in a reply above. Firefox 52.0.2 ESR is the last version compatible with Win XP.

Actually Firefox 52.0.2 ESR is a old version as the current is 52.3.0 ESR (out when 55.0 was Released) and can be downloaded from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/organizations/all/

Firefox 52 ESR will get only security and allowed stability fixes and Firefox 52.8.0 ESR will be out when Firefox 60.0 is Released in May 2018 will likely be the last for the 52 ESR as Firefox 59.0 ESR will be current then.

Sorry. I meant to ask for the last version of Thunderbird compatible with XP.

Thunderbird 52.0 Releases will get security and allowed stability fixes much as if it was ESR and the current Tb 52.3.0 is at https://www.mozilla.org/thunderbird/all/

Note any version 53.0 and later of Firefox and Thunderbird will not work on Windows XP and Vista as you need Windows 7 and minimum for 53.0 and later.

Thanks for your help Dan. I can now say the problem is now resolved. It was caused by a recent re-load of Malewarebytes. I deleted the application and problem was fixed. I have used this app for many years without any issues. Identifying the problem was not easy but perseverance paid off.
