I used to have it but it doesn't seem to be there anymore after a missing internet URL caused Thunderbird to be inactive

Try menu path View->Day pane->Display day pane.

It showed only the day & month was blanked out.

If you mean the mini-calendar is not displayed, that's another check box on that View->Day Pane menu->Show Mini Month.
