Sorry, I can't speak to the functionality of Gmail's filters. I haven't had occasion to use them.

No worries, will head over there to get some more info on that.

For now, I see now in the TB settings there's an option to mark items as read, which is good - should I also check enable adaptive junk filter logging?

You can, but it's only useful if you are having issues with the filters. Then turning the logging on and waiting for a few messages to be processed through the filter(s) might point to the problem source.
