Why do email sends fail if address is not in the address book(s)? :(

Normally they won't fail if the address is not in the address book(s) and the user enters the full and complete address.
More details, please. What version of Thunderbird? Are you entering one address in the address entry field or multiple addresses on one line?

Thanks for quick reply,
Version 52.5.0 (32-bit). One address. Not tried it with multiple addresses.

Does it fail with any and all addresses?
Does the same thing occur if you launch the application in Mozilla Safe Mode? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode

I'll have to try those things and come back to you.

If it's just one particular address:

Email addresses can be exactingly literal and quite fussy. Make sure you have no spaces in the address (including before and after). Another thing I've done that took me forever to find was a comma in place of the dot.
