All I see in the mac logs when I try to run Thunderbird is
12/8/17 10:53:29.397 AM WindowServer[273]: Untrusted client (pid=68215) attempted to set debug options.
12/8/17 10:53:29.482 AM com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]: (org.mozilla.thunderbird.69152[68215]) Service exited with abnormal code: 1
This started when I had to restore my laptop from a time machine backup. So something probably did not get restored right,
but I have no idea what.

Re: Thunderbird on Mac exiting at startup
Somebody with Firefox had a similar problem - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1098513 . It disappeared when they uninstalled it using Mac Remover and reinstalled a fresh copy of the application.
I searched for a similar thread on these forums, no luck. I don't have a Mac so I have no experience with untrusted client problems. I assume you tried to start it manually, so we're not talking about a problem due to it running in the wrong context. Perhaps somebody else can help.

I even tried to run in safe mode - same errors.

Re: Thunderbird on Mac exiting at startup
Are there any recent crash reports in Users/username/Library/Thunderbird/Crash Reports/submitted/ ?
The user library is hidden by default. If you don't know how to display it please read this article http://osxdaily.com/2014/12/16/show-use ... -yosemite/
Try to create a new test profile by starting Thunderbird's Profile Manager https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/us ... e-profiles
