From time to time Thunderbird 'forgets' my passwords and I have to re-enter them (unchanged) in order to send a mail. I continue to receive mails, however. This occurs with Google accounts.
I believe that I am blameless, not having changed any Thunderbird configuration or indeed any configurations at all on my PC or Google!
So what is going on?

Re: Passwords vanish
That can happen when Thunderbird unable to establish a valid connection to the server when trying to send a message. It should simply retry but, depending on the error message sent back by the server, it may instead believe there is a problem with the user name and/or password, making it necessary for the user to remove and reenter the password for that account.
