Retrieving undeleted emails in Thunderbird

I had a bit of meltdown yesterday and used system restore on my laptop.
Now having reinstalled Thunderbird, most of my emails have disappeared from the inbox.
Is there anyway of retrieving them?

More information required.

How is the account set up in Thunderbird, as POP or IMAP? Find out using menu path Tools->Account Settings->Server Settings->Server Type at the top right of the dialogue.
When you reinstalled Thunderbird, did it access the previously existing account or did it ask you to add the account(s) as if they had not previously been present?

Hi Dan, thanks for the reply. All the emails are IMAP accounts and when I went to reinstall, instead of manually entering all the details (ie, server name, etc) it did it automatically.

Are you seeing error messages or is the account coming up but not all messages?

The account is opening up ok but all of this year's emails, apart from the last month or so, have disappeared.

If you log onto that account using a browser, are the older messages there?
Do you have Thunderbird set to view all messages by using menu path View->Messages->All?

Having double checked the account details yesterday, I found it was a POP3 account and not IMAP, so the automatic settings that Thunderbird tried to use to set up the new account weren´t correct. I have changed all of these (ie, redone set up) and now I find there are no messages at all. I imagine it will be the same if I try using a webmail service via the web
