I enabled the beep option when Thunderbird detects the arrival of new POP3 messages.
From my point of view a beep means a sound from the computer case embedded loudspeaker and NOT a beep through the audio card for headset plugins.
Unfortunately it does not work. In opposite to other programs (which produce reliable beeps of the embedded loudspeaker) Thunderbirds seems not to be able for a beep.
Why?
Only the notification message in the lower right corner (near Systray appears).

Perhaps you need to change which sound device is the default.
