24 hours ago I downloaded Thunderbird 52.5.2 portable (by PAF).

Has TBird dumped my favorite layout ... 3 columns :?:

All I can find is 2 columns with messages opened in a new tab. Very tedious with a lot of clicking and closing to skim through the messages

Is this the new Firefox (Quantum) look-a-like :?:

Has TBird already moved to Web-extensions. :?:

I have tried to locate a legacy version that will support pre-web extensions. Any help in that direction would be appreciated.

view -> layout -> vertical view is still built-in and working in my copy of Thunderbird 52.5.2 and the 58.0b2 beta. I have not tried the Third party portable version, I'm using a Mozilla build. Could you be asking about the MoreLayouts add-on at which adds support for Wide Thread View and Stacked View? It hasn't been updated for two years but it still worked when I tried it with 52.5.2.

See ... hunderbird if you want to try an older version. states:

"Mozilla core have disabled "legacy" add-ons (not based purely on WebExtensions) in Firefox 57. Because this type of add-on is not supported from mozilla57 any more, many interfaces have been removed from Mozilla core.

However, Thunderbird 57-59 and Seamonkey still support these add-ons if the appropriate modifications are done to adapt to the changed interfaces. In general, Thunderbird is adding WebExtension support (bug 1396172) while maintaining "legacy" add-ons and hybrid add-ons.
