I moved my profile - successfully - except somewhere I lost the smart folders (eg views of files, like "unread, last 20 days").
I can rewrite them, but it would be helpful if someone can tell me where the descrption definition file for smart folders is stored, in case I can easily restore it - I do have a full back up copy of my local folders and profile BEFORE i started fooling with it!

Exit Thunderbird and delete the virtualfolders.dat file in the profile. When you restart it will create a replacement file. Then you have to add your saved searches again. See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Toolbar_or_wi ... ot_working if that doesn't fully solve your problem. You might have to delete the Xulstore.json file too or use the "Restore Default Set" button for example if the mail views widget for customizing the toolbar also broke.

Re: I "lost" my smart folders
In addition to the advice given above about deleting virtualfolders.dat, I would also delete the smart mailboxes subfolders of the Mail folder.
