Access remote profile (Linux system)

I have my data files on a different partition to my home partition.
I tried a symbolic link to ~/my_home/,thunderbird but that failed.
I tried entering the path in the profile.ini' path statement.
But I get 'your profile is either missing or inaccessible'.
Is it possible that Thunderbird is just not happy with path strings or do they require to be in a particular form?
