Hey everyone,
Thunderbird keeps asking me if I want to compact my folders on startup, what does that mean? Why is it asking me to do this?
Thanks,

Hi,
It's all to do with you "deleting" the message/s & actually "removing" them from Thunderbird.
For ref; > http://kb.mozillazine.org/Compacting_folders
Check what you have set in it's Options.

To ensure we're understanding the issue, how is the account set up in Thunderbird, as POP or IMAP? Find out using menu path Tools->Account Settings->Server Settings->Server Type at the top right of the dialogue.

@Limpet235 Thanks, appreciate that. @DanRaisch Both of my emails are set up as IMAP, thanks again.

First backup your profile -- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_backup
Close Thunderbird and navigate to your Profile Folder ( http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Folder ). Find the files with the extension msf, such as Inbox.msf. Note that there will be sets of two files with the same names but only one of these will have the MSF extension. Delete the files with the MSF extension. Restart Thunderbird, compact all folders, and see if things are back to normal. Note that the MSF files do NOT contain your messages. They are, for lack of a better term, an index file and will be recreated by Thunderbird as required.

Thanks Dan, that worked, how often do you recommend I compact my folders?

Re: Thunderbird keeps asking me to compact folders on startu
With default Thunderbird settings, compact is automatic. However, there is a bug where it doesn't happen - fix should be shipped in a few weeks in version 60.tomatoshadow2 wrote:Thanks Dan, that worked, how often do you recommend I compact my folders?
