Stop gmail from controlling (synching the) TB account??
When I add a gmail account in TB, gmail makes this TB account a mirror (synched) of the online gmail.com account. Is it possible to make my email account in version 52.7.0 the master account, such that the folders in TB are not synched to gmail.com, but are just downloaded, not synched, so I can control everything from TB?

It sounds as though you want to add that Gmail account to Thunderbird as a POP3 type accounts. Add another account to Thunderbird using the information from this article to set it up as a POP account -- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Using_Gmail_w ... illa_Suite
Once you have this new account working, remove the IMAP Gmail account from Thunderbird.

I did all that, but it still keeps the TB account as-if it is imap, i.e., synched with gmail as the controller. I even deleted the account and reestablished it in TB as a pop account, with the gmail.com account also converted to be POP, but the TB account is still synched to gmail.com as a slave.

Please clarify what you mean by that. What is happening that makes you say that?TB account is still synched to gmail.com as a slave.

I appear to have resolved the problem.
SMTP was set up as smtp.gmail.com, not pop.gmail.com.
SMTP was set up as smtp.gmail.com, not pop.gmail.com.

Still not clear here. You can't use pop.gmail.com for an SMTP server name. A POP server is for incoming messages.SMTP was set up as smtp.gmail.com, not pop.gmail.com.
SMTP.gmail.com or SMTP.googlemail.com are correct choices for the outgoing server.
