As far as I understand compacting message folders is only possible for "mbox"-based accounts but not for "maildir" based accounts.
Can someone confirm this?

Yes.
A mbox account stores all of the messages for a mail folder in a mbox file named after the folder, but with no file extension. Compacting physically removes any messages in the mbox file that were marked deleted, but hidden from view in the folder listing. Maildir stores each message as a separate file. Since compacting is only done to folders, it doesn't effect maildir based accounts.
