My GMail replies aren't being placed in Inbox

Post by ultramage »

I configured my GMail IMAP account to "When sending messages, automatically: Place a copy in: Other: Inbox on <gmail address>". This does nothing. Just in case, I also checked "Place replies in the folder of the messages being replied to". This also does nothing. They only appear in "Sent" and "Sent Mail" (no idea why there are two folders). My other non-gmail accounts have no problem with this setting. Using TB 52.9.1 on Windows.

The Gmail SMTP server automatically stores a copy of a sent message in the "Sent Mail" folder. You can't disable that feature. If you configure Thunderbird to store a copy of the sent message using the accounts "copies & folders -> when sending messages automatically" settings that creates a duplicate. That's why its recommended you disable Thunderbird saving a copy. However I don't understand why the duplicate is in "Sent" rather than the specified "Inbox" folder.

If you want a copy of your sent mail to only be in the specified inbox folder you need to use a different providers SMTP server with your Gmail IMAP account. If you have a non-Gmail account you could configure the Gmail account to use it's SMTP server in the outgoing server (smtp) settings at the bottom of the account pane that specifies your accounts name and email address. Using a different accounts SMTP server usually isn't a problem since you specify the username/password for the SMTP server in its settings. I don't think it will work with a AOL (or Gmail) SMTP server, but it should with most other major email providers.

Nah, that would trip all sorts of red flags (From: user and domain not matching sender id and host, plus server might not permit third-party domain impersonation). I'd prefer to have this fixed. I have no idea why it's going into 'Sent' (nonstandard folder). Thunderbird is recognizing it as an outbox type folder according to the icon, which is also worrying.

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1427619 mentions https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=413240

I can duplicate the problem with a Gmail IMAP account ignoring a setting to use a different accounts inbox. However, that problem seems to also occur with some non-Gmail accounts. I suggest you install the latest beta from https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/channel/ in a different directory (custom setup), re-test and if the problem still occurs file a bug report at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org . Mention in the bug report the problem also occurs with 52.9.1. If you do that please post a link to the bug report.

The reason I suggest this approach is there is a large backlog of bug reports and this increases the odds a developer will pay attention to the bug report (since a lot of effort is being made to get version 60 ready for release).

I wanted to have a copy of the sent emails in the same folder than the original message AND a copy in the Sent mails folder. This worked well for Google accounts but not not for other accounts. I solved the issue with a filter rule and I suspect you could do the same for your Google account.

(my menus are in French so I may not have the exact titles)
  • Click on Alt to see full menus. Go to Tools –> Options –> Message Filters.
  • At the top, select your Gmail account
  • Create a rule like this:
    – Click on "New"
    – Give a name (ex: Sent mails)
    – In the series of check boxes, make sure the only one checked is the last one: After sending
    – Insert the following rule: Subject – Does not contain – zzzzzzzzzzz (i.e. something that will never happen)
    – Execute the following actions: Copy the message to –> Inbox on Gmail account.
