Thunderbird - Updating from v2.0.0.24 to current version

Post by opti1 »

Hello -

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 with Windows Updates current through May.

I have been preparing to update my Thunderbird v2.0.0.24 (don't ask) to the current version. Meanwhile Mozilla just dropped the significantly updated Thunderbird v60. I know v52 also was\is a significant upgrade from v2.0.0.24, but I'm wondering if maybe the step to v52 first and then a subsequent update to v60 might be a better approach given what I've read about the step from v52 to v60.

What do you think?

Also, I am inclined to leave the existing v2.0.0.24 installed (just in case, for fall back) and install v52\v60 in a new folder. If I do that I am considering renaming the current v2.0.0.24 Thunderbird folder to something else so that v52\v60 can use Thunderbird to name its folder.

What do you think about this?

Thanks!

They haven't enabled automated upgrading from 52.* to 60 yet, you need to download the setup program for version 60 from the web site and manually install it.

If you want to install version 60 I suggest you backup the profile and then select custom setup when installing in order to install TB 60 in a different directory. Be aware most (maybe all) of your add-ons might not work. You can try setting extensions.strictCompatibility false using the config editor if you want to try installing a add-on that supports many recent versions of Thunderbird, but not version 60. Your saved passwords are stored in different files in recent versions, so you will need to enter them again when prompted. The Lightning calendar add-on is bundled in recent versions, and will want to auto-install. You can cancel that if you want.

However, I recommend you install 52.9.1 instead of 60. You are going to run into many changes, there is little harm in waiting a couple of months to upgrade 52.9.1 to 60.1 when the add-on situation may have stabilized.

https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/ is the new web site for Thunderbird.

Thanks for your response.

I have no add-ons and have no plans to install any at this point. I also have no plans to install Lightning so thanks for the heads up on that one. I also don't have saved passwords so that won't be an issue either.

Sounds like upgrading to v52 should be pretty straight-foward (he said with some trepidation).

Thanks!
