Pasting images from 'Copy image' from Chrome[Linux]

Post by Lantizia »

Lo,

The scenario is nothing too alien. I have a Ubuntu MATE 18.04.1 desktop with Chrome and Thunderbird installed. If I have a web page open in Chrome with an image displayed on it, I can right click it and select 'Copy image' (note, *not* 'Copy image address'). I can then start to compose a new HTML e-mail in Thunderbird... right click an empty space and select 'Paste'.

What occurs is Thunderbird doesn't actually paste the image data inline for the e-mail (or even as an attachment) - but rather just makes a <img> tag that sources the URL of the image originally found via Chrome.

I get the impression that 'Copy image' on Chrome now possibly includes the original URL in the clipboard *along* with the actual image data.

If I paste the same image from Chrome into say 'The GIMP' then I get the actual image data appearing - and I presume 'The GIMP' isn't scuttling away to fetch the image on my behalf over the web.

Some other issues I've noticed on the web which seem to be similar (but not exactly the same same scenario) from this year...

https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/is ... ?id=838808

Assuming both the actual image and the original URL the image came from are *BOTH* in the clipboard data... how can we get Thunderbird to prefer the actual image data when I use 'Paste' ?
This would be handy as often recipients of HTML e-mails get warnings about 3rd party sites being used to host images.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Steven

edit->paste created a base64 encoded MIME section containing the image when I copied a image from Chrome 70.0.3538.67 into a Thunderbird HTML message, under Windows 10. It correctly displayed the pasted image. I'm using Thunderbird 60.2.1 under Windows 10.

However, when I selected several images and then copied the image it actually only copied one of them. I verified this wasn't a Thunderbird specific problem by also pasting it into IranView and getting the same results.

What version of Thunderbird are you using?
Does this problem also occur when copying images from different browsers?

Good questions :)
After testing it seems that if I use 'Copy Image' (rather than 'Copy Image Location') in Firefox I get the same behaviour in Thunderbird.
Thunderbird version is 52.9.1 (64-bit) - I have it pinned just in case it tries to go to 60 and breaks some of my extensions.

Copying the image from Firefox and pasting it into a 32 bit or 64 bit version of Thunderbird works on my PC. The new snapshot feature they added to Firefox is convenient. I also re-tested with a 32-bit build of 52.9.1 - it works fine too.

I suggest you see if one of your add-ons is the culprit by re-testing after using "help -> restart with add-ons disabled".

Same problem even in safe mode (all add-ons disabled)

Also I should think the Windows and Linux methods of storing/using the clipboard differ sufficiently to invalidate comparing what you see on a Windows box to my Linux box. Any Linux desktop users out there seeing this? (or not?)

I searched the official forums (they have more traffic) and couldn't find any mention of a similar problem. The closest bug reports I could find were https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1376198 , https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=714508 , and https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=536682
