Cursor size in Write box larger than font size (Mac)

Post by Stroker131 »

Thunderbird v60.3.0 cursor size in Write box (outgoing message box) is much larger than font size on Mac OS X El Capitan.

I think this problem began with a previous T-Bird auto update.

The cursor size is about 1-inch in size, but the font is only 18 Pt. As such, line spacing is about 1-inch instead of the font’s point size.

I assume this is a Preference problem. I’ve checked them (Display, Composition, Formatting, Advanced, etc) and played around with them, but haven’t found the problem.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

I'm not aware of a way to increase just the cursor size, I thought that was always a side effect of the currently selected font size. Try running in safe mode (help -> restart with add-ons disabled) to see if this is a side effect of a add-on not working correctly with 60.* . If that doesn't help see if anything in http://kb.mozillazine.org/Toolbar_or_wi ... ot_working is useful. Perhaps one of the files storing information about the display stored invalid data due to some hiccup. Some of them (such as xulstore.json) can store font/font size information.

Did you try to change the cursor size in the System Preferences?

Thanks for the reply but I forgot to say that it's Windows 7.

Please edit the title for your first post to state its using Windows 7. I think the original confusion was that the user agent for the browser you used to create the post had Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.11

Try installing 52.9.1 in a different directory (using custom setup) and see if its really a version specific problem or not. You can keep the current version, both will use the same profile. Note that you will need to set extensions.strictCompatibility again (once you are done using 52.9.1.) if you modified it for 60.* as 52.9.1 and 60.* have different default values for it.

Apologies. It's my (rigsby999) fault. I got an email notification and I (wrongly) thought it was a response to my problem which is this thread here :- http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic ... #p14814428

Totally my fault. Sorry.

Thanks to everyone trying to help.

Let me clarify:

I am Stroker131, the OP. I am not rigsby999. I am a Mac user, not a Windows user.

FYI:
I have a very stable Mac Pro system running El Capitan. I run MS Office, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Lightroom, Premiere, and more.

Thunderbird is the most kludgy and unintuitive software I have installed on this system.

I have used Thunderbird since the early 2000s, over 15 years, which is when I upgraded from Netscape to Mozilla Firefox & Thunderbird. Never had this problem before.

I do not have a cursor problem anywhere else on my system except with the Thunderbird Write (output) box. The problem suddenly started earlier this year.

Is there a way to attach a screen snap (png file) to a post to show an example of exactly what I am talking about?

Again, when I draft an outgoing email, the cursor is very large and spaces each text line about 1-inch below the last line. However, once I send the email, the email shows up in T-Bird’s Sent file and the formatting displays correctly (i.e., not 1-inch spacing, but proper spacing according to font point size).

I’m wondering whether I may have a corrupted T-Bird system file.

Is it possible to reinstall T-Bird while saving all of my old email files?

Would I have to trash the T-Bird Preferences file?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks much,

Stroker131

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Posting_a_scr ... _the_forum
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_backup

You can uninstall Thunderbird and reinstall it without losing your profile (mail folders, settings, add-ons, saved passwords etc.). The reason that works is because the profile is not stored in the same directory as the application. Just don't check the checkbox to delete your data when uninstalling. When you re-install it will automatically find and reuse your profile. If you're worried, backup your profile beforehand. That can be as simple use Help -> Troubleshooting Information -> Open Folder to open your systems file manager at the current profile, and then copy/paste that directory somewhere safe.

Thanks for responding.

I backed up my T-Bird Profile to a separate HD as I have been doing for years. Following was its address:

Library/Thunderbird/Profiles/fv1obpsw.default

However, how do I uninstall T-Bird on a Mac?

Does the Mac have a T-Bird uninstall” command, or do I just drag the T-Bird app to the trash?

I’m not aware of an uninstall command on a Mac. Maybe I’ve been dozing.

What about the T-bird’s Preference file? Do I have to drag it to the Trash also, or does the reinstall process build a new preferences file?

You mentioned “Just don't check the checkbox to delete your data when uninstalling.”

What checkbox are you referring to? Is this a Windows checkbox or a Mac box?

What brings up the checkbox on a Mac?

Sorry about the confusion.

Thanks much.
