Thunderbird 60.3.3 S-L-O-W

Post by amcgall »

Running on Windows 10 Pro 64-bit version 1709. Version 60.3.3 of Thunderbird. PC uses an AMD FX 8350 4.0 GHZ CPU and 8GB RAM. Also using a SSD (Solid State Hard Drive). Commands take 8 seconds to start (yes I timed it). Sometimes if I close Thunderbird and restart it it speeds up. But after a while it becomes slow again. When I click on an action or try to open or delete an email it takes 8-seconds before anything happens. Even if Thunderbird is the only app running. Tis has actually been happening through several versions of Thunderbird.

I have tried both the 32 and 64-bit versions of Thunderbird.

I've tried several of the suggestions I've found online but none seem to help.

Any help would be appreciated.

See if http://kb.mozillazine.org/Performance_-_Thunderbird helps.

Does your performance problem occur even with opening a message in a new folder (not your inbox etc.)? I'm asking to rule out corrupt folders etc.

I suggest you install a significantly older version of Thunderbird such as 45.8.0 in a different directory, using custom setup to help figure out if its your environment, profile or version of Thunderbird that is at fault. https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird ... n32/en-US/ has the setup program for the windows us-english version of Thunderbird 45.8.0 . It will use your existing profile, and there is no need to uninstall the current version. It may disable some of your add-ons. If you set extensions.strictCompatibility false for 60.* you will need to set it again the next time you run version 60.* as its value will have been reset to the default value of true.

See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Go_back_to_an ... hunderbird for more information

When you say open a message in a new folder, I don't know what you mean. It's not just opening a message that is slow. Anything I click on is slow to respond. For example, if I click on the Tools pull-down menu it takes about 3-4 seconds for it to open.

Please keep in mind that if I shut down Thunderbird and restart it everything is up to speed again.

I understood that not just opening a message is slow. I suggested you do that just to rule out one class of problems. You need to start somewhere. I suspect you need to focus on the unusual problems section of the performance KB article.

Roughly how long does it take after you restart Thunderbird for the problem to re-occur?

How much memory is Thunderbird using when this problem occurs? You might have a memory leak and the system thrash due to not having enough free memory. help -> troubleshooting has a about:memory link. I'm running 60.3.3 with global indexing enabled, Lightning (its a resource pig) and 9 accounts. None of my recently open folders are very large (largest inbox is 552 messages). The optional MS-Windows Integrated search is disabled. Memory usage varies between 160 and 200MB. If your memory usage is over 500MB you might have a memory leak. Keep in mind that each time you press about:memory Thunderbird uses more memory (unless you exit and restart).

I'm on a Windows 10 Home version 1803 system with 16GB , a SSD and a AMD Ryzen 7 (8 core, 3.6Ghz) CPU. It normally uses about 6.2GB with Firefox, Vivaldi (Chrome clone), and Thunderbird running. My anti-virus scanner (free version of BitDefender) doesn't "know" about email (it has no hooks into Thunderbird).

Troubleshooting using https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Te ... e_Problems is a royal pain but is very useful if you have a memory leak.
