new messages have stopped displaying

I get the bold folder name with the number of unread messages I have received in that mailbox, but the messages are not there.

What do I do?

Have you tried menu path View->Messages->All?

I make regular backups, so (before I got your suggestion) I replaced the entire Roaming>Thunderbird directory with the latest backup and things seem to be working.

As long as the backup was made AFTER the latest message receipt that sounds like a successful outcome.

Actually it was before the current receipts, but it uses POP and messages are left on the server for 10 days, so it just redownloaded them
