get address es from an old installtion
Just installed and no installed addresses: can I have an old installation from an old hard disk. How would I find and put them on the one?
Win 10 Pro desktop, but now 64-bit latest Windows 10. Usually latest or latest-1 Thunderbird on this machines.

If you just had a personal and a collected addresses address book copy the *.mab files (the address books) from the old profile over the corresponding *.mab files in the new profile. Otherwise see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Moving_addres ... n_profiles

Sir: copy + Ctrl-c & paste is Ctrl-v right? I don't think it worked. I didn't see much in the new installation but in the old, there were lots of *.mab files?

If there are more than 2 *.mab files that means the others won't be recognized unless they are specified in prefs.js. That's why I also posted a link to http://kb.mozillazine.org/Moving_addres ... n_profiles - it deals with those issues.
The MoreFunctionsForAddressBook add-on at http://www.nic-nac-project.org/~kaosmos ... ls-en.html is the easiest solution (lets you import *.mab files as is) but it doesn't support version 68.* (and never will, according to the add-on author).

Re: get address es from an old installtion
Sir: Nothing shows but a blank screen with: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Moving_addres ... n_profiles (the field in Firefox was blank just a few minutes ago) at all & & as to https://freeshell.de//~kaosmos/morecols-en.html I have version 68 so that rules out the What's this about prefs.js? Let me explain with the big picture: With my original computer Was a Dell Optiplex. The hard disk had a crash & while still in warranty they shipped me a new one with Windows 10 Pro preinstalled. I still had the hard disk with Firefox & and Thunderbird by use of copying I got lots of information up from but not the address books. I would then need a way to get them. I'll try any suggestions you suggest. Thank you for your time.tanstaafl wrote:If there are more than 2 *.mab files that means the others won't be recognized unless they are specified in prefs.js. The knowledge base has been down a lot but its back up. I had no problems viewing http://kb.mozillazine.org/Moving_addres ... n_profiles .
You can also look in google's cache of a web page. Its cached at https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/ ... n_profiles . One easy way to find a cached web page is to copy and paste the URL into the search box at https://cachedviews.com/ or https://sitechecker.pro/google-cache/
Prefs.js is the file used to store your settings. Its what the config editor modifies. You could copy and paste the related entries for the extra address books from the old prefs.js to the new one. If you do that, back it up first in case you make a mistake. Another solution would be to move the old profile to the new disk, and then import any missing mail from the new profile, if it can't be downloaded/fetched again from the server.

The KB is currently in read-only mode while waiting to see what happens to the web site. Version 68 has a built-in profile manager using a about:profiles link in help -> troubleshooting information. That's not mentioned in the KB article.
