new to thunderbird, when opening a new message I have to select 'options', 'show remote content', is there an option I am missing when the content is automatically selected? all help and advice appreciated

See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Privacy_basics_-_Thunderbird
Thunderbird normally highlights the top line of the message body and adds a "show remote content" button at the far right. Pressing that button brings up a list box. You can use that button to temporarily display the remote images or permanently enable some/all of the sources. If you're not looking for that button its easy to miss.
You can also use Tools -> Options -> Privacy -> Mail Content -> Exceptions to permanently white list all images from certain email addresses or web sites.
