Cannot delete messages

I find I can no longer remove unwanted messages from the inbox. When I select a new message and hit the delete key, it places a bold red x before the message, but does not remove it. I have tried sending the deleted messages to trash, but that does not work either. How do I get the messages out of my inbox?

How is the account set up in Thunderbird, as POP or IMAP? Find out using menu path Tools->Account Settings->Server Settings->Server Type at the top right of the dialogue.

It is an IMAP account.

Right click on the name of that Inbox folder and select "Properties" from the context menu, then click on "Repair Folder."

Check which setting is selected under menu path Tools->Account Settings->Server Settings->"When I delete a message:". It sounds as though you want to select "Move it to this folder:" and select which folder you want to see those messages moved to.
